Polo Ramírez is a Peruvian artist and potter, celebrated for promoting Chulucanas pottery on the global stage. Born near the ancient Vicús archaeological site in Piura, Peru, Polo learned the art of pottery from his family, mastering the traditional Rock and Paddle Technique. His work reflects the duality of life, blending rawness and beauty, and honors the legacy of pre-Columbian Vicús and Tallán cultures. Based in Miami, Polo shares his craft through workshops, exhibitions, and his book El Tata y el Chilalo (The Potter Bird), preserving the rich heritage of Peruvian pottery.”
The Workshop titled “Pit and Smoke Firing”
Workshop” is a 1-day event lasting approximately 8 hours. The workshop includes the following
activities:
● Introduction: Overview of the pit and smoke firing techniques
● Participant Activity: Participants will bring their own two bisque pots to add to the pit and smoke firing. You must have premade bisque pottery for this workshop, burnished pots are a plus. Will will not be making any pottery that day, you must bring your own.
● Engobe Process Overview: Explanation and demonstration of the preparation of
natural engobes used to paint clay.
● Firing Process Overview: Explanation of the ceramic firing processes.
● Open Discussion: Q&A session to conclude the workshop.
